This 3rd quarter 19th century Shirvan is most probably Baku from Azerbaijan measures 4’11” X 13’8″. To me the blue is the giveaway to Baku. I believe the rug is 1850-1875 because it lacks any corner solution indicating its age. The field is midnight blue with three medallions on a sky blue ground aka “baku blue”. The field is completely covered in various colored botehs in brown, blue and red. It has one pair of reciprocal borders with flower heads on a brown ground with minimal erosion. The minor interior border is barber pole. The major border is a very nice abrash blue from a very dark to a pale blue. I don’t really know the name of the design in this border which is reminiscent of vine and flower but nicer. One exceptionally cool thing about this rug among the many are the fringes that are 8-12 inches long with an open weave. They are really stunning! The rug is essentially full pile. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go.
